Prepare a PSC design from a device paper
Filter performance, export records, verify layers and sources, then save a design case.

What you will complete
Find a MAPbI3 solar-cell paper in Device Database, check one sample's performance and fabrication route, then organize its layer stack in Materials Synthesis. Retain the paper reference, current-page records, layer parameters and open questions.
This exercise uses a searchable database paper and does not require uploading literature first. To add your own sources, select the relevant knowledge base using the knowledge-evidence settings.
1. Search and set a performance range
- Open Resources → Device Database and choose Solar cells (PSC).
- Enter
MAPbI3and select Search. - Expand the performance filters, set the lower PCE bound to
20, leave the upper bound empty and apply. - Use the PCE header to adjust sorting, then choose a paper with layer and fabrication information.
The value 20 is an example filter for this exercise. PCE values may reflect different illumination and test conditions, which you will check after choosing a candidate. If no results appear, clear the PCE bound or reset and search with the keyword alone. You can also search by the DOI of a known paper.
Record the selected paper's title, DOI and device identifier. Keep subsequent steps focused on the same paper and sample.
2. Keep a query record
Confirm that the current page contains the target paper, select Export view and save devices.json. Separately record the query date, category, keywords, performance range and page number.
The file contains only the current page. Export other pages separately if needed. See Export the current page for count definitions and saving instructions.
3. Check the sample, layers and process
Open the paper title for details. Confirm its DOI and device ID, then read the core metrics, fabrication steps, layer structure and stability data.
Select fabrication steps and layers in the 3D structure to inspect the corresponding details. Use the exploded view when overlapping layers are hard to distinguish. Record the following for each layer:
Initially mark missing fields as “to verify”. Avoid combining parameters from different samples into one recipe. See Device and fabrication details.
4. Verify against the paper
Follow the DOI to the paper. Check key values against the text, figures, tables and available supplementary material, including sample identity and test conditions. Pay particular attention to illumination, device area, measurement method, and stability-test temperature, humidity and encapsulation.
For verified parameters, record the relevant figure, table or passage. Mark information absent from the paper as “unreported”. If you cannot access the source yet, retain “to verify” rather than treating an extracted value as confirmed.
To explore material and process relationships, optionally open the device hypergraph and set its direction and paper count. Record that scope alongside any exported graph image.
5. Bring the paper into synthesis design
- Open Research Apps → Materials Synthesis and choose the perovskite PSC workspace.
- In the design area, open Import case → Device papers. Search with the DOI or paper identifier you recorded and select the target paper.
- In the knowledge-evidence section, confirm that device papers and relationship graphs are enabled. If a knowledge base is needed, explicitly select it and enable its source.
- Return to the conversation and paste the prompt below. Replace the bracketed fields with the actual paper and sample information before sending.
If the paper search returns no match, check the identifier and keywords instead of substituting a similarly titled paper. When the response arrives, compare its DOI, sample identity and layer sequence with your notes from steps 3 and 4.
6. Review and save the design
Use ordinary text suggestions to edit layers manually. If the response provides a device-design proposal, review its scope before applying it. Afterwards, check materials, order and parameters layer by layer, and inspect the stack in the 3D preview.
Once the design is ready to retain, save a case. For example, name it “MAPbI3 · Paper layer structure” and include the DOI, target sample, applicable conditions and open questions in its notes. See Save and reuse a case.
Before finishing, check that:
- Exported records can be matched to the query conditions.
- The layer sequence, process parameters and performance refer to the same sample.
- Verified parameters have source references, and missing or unverified information remains labeled.
- The saved design matches the reviewed stack, with model suggestions recorded separately from reported data.
The result is a documented design with traceable sources. Plan subsequent experiments around the actual equipment, materials and test conditions.
